No fewer than 13 people lose their lives and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key public works projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” stated the head of state.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his government's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The development of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, defying predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked persistent questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was suggested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
