Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of planning a military coup in last fall and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after recent developments emerged.

This included seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a document approving the custody, the magistrate said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a assembly of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on social media on last Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could "pray for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the chance of the former president's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of organizing to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.

The court filing highlights that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.

Worldwide Consequences

His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist US President Trump, causing him to enact a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being held in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also asked that he be allowed to depart his residence for medical care, saying he demanded ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was determined responsible of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plot which encompassed plans to kill the current president and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was prevented because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the armed forces officials. His successor was took office without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised official structures in the capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement stepped in and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by him whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the period, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
